Grocery Store Renovation + Office Design

Our firm served as Lead Designers for the comprehensive exterior and interior renovation of the Winn Dixie complex located in Downtown Freeport, Grand Bahama. This transformative redevelopment reimagined a long standing commercial property into a revitalized, multi tenant facility designed to meet modern retail and workspace standards. The project was executed as a joint venture between private stakeholders and a branch of the Bahamian Government. The existing structure, formerly home to the Winn Dixie Grocery Store, was strategically divided to accommodate a new contemporary grocery store, now Solomon’s, while also integrating professional office spaces to house said government branch. In addition to full architectural design services, our firm carried out Construction Administration throughout the construction phase to ensure the project was delivered in alignment with design intent, quality expectations, and established timelines.

The Process
Concept Development
The design approach centered on adaptive reuse and urban revitalization. Our objective was to preserve the structural integrity of the existing building while introducing architectural upgrades that would reflect a refreshed, modern identity.
Exterior façade enhancements were carefully developed to strengthen the building’s presence within Downtown Freeport, improving visual impact and reinforcing its role as a commercial anchor. The design balanced durability, functionality, and aesthetic refinement to create a cohesive and contemporary expression.
Spatial Planning
Internally, the building required a strategic reconfiguration to successfully divide the former single tenant grocery store into distinct, efficient spaces for retail and government use.
Careful attention was given to circulation, access points, service areas, and operational functionality. The grocery component was planned to support modern retail standards, while the office spaces were designed to accommodate professional workflows, security considerations, and public accessibility. Each zone was thoughtfully defined while maintaining overall coherence within the shared structure.
Final Touches
As part of our Construction Administration role, we provided ongoing coordination with contractors and stakeholders to ensure precision in execution and consistency in material quality and detailing.
Construction of the building envelope was led by Mr. Patrick McDonald, of Patrick McDonald Construction Company, while the interior fit out was led by Craig Kemp, of Select Design and Construction Co. Ltd. Through collaborative teamwork and attentive oversight, the project was successfully delivered as a renewed, purpose driven facility that contributes to the continued revitalization of Downtown Freeport.
This redevelopment stands as a strong example of adaptive reuse, strategic partnership, and thoughtful architectural leadership within Grand Bahama.
